Equine Therapy: Bringing hope to adults with eating disorders at Cotswold House

Our patients at Cotswold House, Marlborough, have found hope and healing through a wonderful initiative that integrates equine therapy into their recovery journey.

The adult eating disorder inpatient service has developed a partnership with Greatwood Charity, a local centre dedicated to rehoming and caring for retired racehorses.

Staff have previously taken some of our patients to Greatwood’s site to spend time grooming and feeding the horses. Recently, they had the pleasure of hosting visits from one of their horses, Marv, in the gardens of our site at Savernake Hospital. The presence of Marv, along with his handler, has provided a unique and enjoyable experience for the patients during their eating disorder treatment.

There are many recognised benefits of animal-based therapeutic activities, including emotional support, social interaction and creating a sense of purpose. It has been lovely to see how people have enjoyed their time with Marv. One shared that they “absolutely loved” the visits. They talked about growing up around horses, recalling how the horses’ smell brings back happy memories and asking, “Why can’t he (Marv) come every day?”

This collaboration offers a unique and enriching addition to recovery for individuals struggling with eating disorders. It highlights our commitment to enhancing the well-being of our patients through creative and compassionate approaches.

Cathrine Sage, Interim Associate Director for the HOPE Provider Collaborative adds that “time spent with animals can really enhance our wellbeing, providing comfort and engaging all our senses. Horses, being particularly sentient, have the power to captivate and connect – for everyone, not only those familiar with working with horses. It is incredibly heartening to hear about the impact Marv has had in helping people with their recovery”.

We look forward to sharing more about the collaboration with Greatwood Charity and exploring further ways to support our patient’s recovery journeys.
